Most people understand the benefits of exercise. They want to improve their fitness, lose weight and get stronger, but getting started isn’t always easy.
After years of working as a personal trainer, I’ve found that the most common barriers are a lack of time, feeling nervous about joining a gym and worrying about previous injuries.
I Don’t Have Enough Time
Work, family and everyday responsibilities can make exercise feel difficult to fit in. However, you don’t need to train every day to see results.
Two or three well-structured strength training sessions each week can make a genuine difference to your health and fitness. The key is finding a routine you can maintain consistently.
If travelling to the gym is the problem, working with a home personal trainer can also make strength training easier to fit around your schedule.
I Feel Nervous About the Gym
Gym anxiety is incredibly common, especially if you haven’t exercised for a long time.
You might worry that everyone is fitter than you or that you won’t know how to use the equipment. This is why finding the right gym and personal trainer matters.
A good coach should explain each exercise, adjust the workout to your ability and help you build confidence gradually. You don’t need to get fit before joining a gym, that’s what the gym is there to help you do.
Creating this type of welcoming environment was one of the main reasons I started Movement Wins in Dubai Sports City
I’m Worried About an Injury
Previous injuries often make people nervous about returning to exercise.
Pain shouldn’t be ignored, but it doesn’t always mean you need to stop training completely. Exercises can often be adjusted by changing the movement, weight or range of motion.
A good personal trainer will work with your current ability and help you find exercises you can perform comfortably. If necessary, they can also work alongside advice from your doctor or physiotherapist.
The goal isn’t to push through pain. It’s to find what you can do and gradually build from there.
Exercise, Strength Training and Weight Loss
Many people begin exercising because they want to lose weight. Cardio can help, but strength training is also important because it helps you build or maintain muscle while improving your fitness.
A combination of regular strength training, walking and sensible nutrition is usually more sustainable than extreme diets or intense workouts every day.
Start With What You Can Manage
You don’t need the perfect exercise programme. You simply need a realistic starting point.
That could mean two gym sessions per week, a daily walk, joining a beginner-friendly gym or working with a personal trainer.
At Movement Wins, our personal trainers in Dubai Sports City help people improve their strength, fitness and confidence through personal training and small group exercise.
If time, nerves or injuries have been preventing you from exercising, get in touch. We’ll help you find a place to start.
