Most members reach the same moment 12 to 18 months in. The early wins have landed: more strength, looser hips, a back that finally survives a day at the desk. Then the question changes from “can I get fit?” to “what else can I do?” People want to jump higher, finish a Hyrox, get their first strict pull-up or simply feel athletic again.
That isn’t boredom. It’s adaptation. Your body has absorbed the training it was given, and the same stimulus now produces less change. The next level of progress needs something new. PERF is that something.
Same Principles, Bigger Toolbox
PERF follows exactly the same principles as FIT: full-body compound lifting, planned progression, technique before load and real-time coaching.
What changes is the dose and the tools. PERF adds four elements and each one earns its place.
More training volume
A trained body needs more work to keep adapting. Research shows a clear dose-response link between weekly training volume and muscle growth: more quality sets produce more growth, up to a point.
PERF adds work gradually across each training block, with lighter weeks built in. That matters, because adaptation happens during recovery, not during the session. More volume only helps if you can recover from it, which is why PERF assumes a base rather than trying to build one.
Olympic lifting technique
Here’s the quality most people over 35 never think about. Strength is how much force you can produce. Power is how fast you can produce it. Research shows power declines earlier and more steeply than strength, with a noticeable drop from around 40, while strength tends to hold until about 50.
Power is what catches you when you trip on a kerb or lets you step quickly out of harm’s way. Yet most programmes barely train it, because slow, controlled reps build strength, not speed.
Olympic lifting is power training in its purest form. A meta-analysis found Olympic lifting training improved vertical jump height by 7.7% compared with control groups, and by 5.1% compared with traditional resistance training. We teach it through positions, pulls and hang variations, not maximal competition lifts.
Hyrox elements
Hyrox combines eight one-kilometer runs with eight functional stations, and it rewards a genuinely well-rounded engine. The research is still young but the first scientific study of the format found its heaviest demand is endurance capacity, with lower requirements for maximal strength than other functional fitness formats.
That’s why carries, lunges, wall balls and machine intervals belong in PERF. They build the ability to keep producing good-quality movement while your heart rate is high, which is exactly what most people notice missing when life asks them to work hard for longer than a minute.
Bodyweight gymnastics
Pull-ups, dips and push-ups show how well you control your own body. That’s relative strength and it matters more with every passing year.
There’s a health signal here too. In a ten-year study of 1,104 male firefighters, men who could do more than 40 push-ups had 96% fewer cardiovascular events than men who managed fewer than ten. That’s an association, not proof and the study only included men. But it’s a strong signal that bodyweight strength says something about overall health.
For desk-adapted bodies, these movements need respect. Dips load the front of the shoulder and a stiff upper back changes how you push overhead. So PERF progresses gymnastics through scaled variations and range-of-motion standards first.
Why 8-12 Is the Limit
A slow squat gives a coach three or four seconds to spot a fault. A hang clean happens in under a second. A lazy hip drive or an early arm pull is invisible unless a coach is standing close and watching you specifically. In a class of 30, those faults go uncorrected for months and uncorrected faults are where plateaus and injuries come from.
That’s why PERF, like every Movement Wins class, is capped at 8-12. Performance training doesn’t mean ego training. No bro vibes. No intimidation. No one making you feel like you’re behind.
Is PERF Right for You?
PERF is a progression, not a starting point. You’re ready if you’ve trained consistently for several months, can squat, hinge and press overhead pain-free and recover well between sessions. Your coach will make the call with you, because moving across too early is the fastest way to stop progressing.
If you’re not there yet, that isn’t a verdict. Everyone in PERF started exactly where you are.
